Our dogs are a part of the family, so naturally we enjoy taking them out of the house with us. But before summer arrives and the patio outings pick back up, you need to be prepared. Here’s what responsible dog owners of party pups do to keep their dogs safe, well-mannered and happy in public.

Know Where Pups Are Welcomed

Public places are becoming increasingly dog friendly as pets become more enmeshed in our daily lives. Having a plan before you go out with your pooch is a great way to make sure you’ve chosen a place you both will be comfortable. Even if a place allows dogs, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good environment for your pet. Before bringing your dog along, visit the place and scope out it’s fur-friend accommodations. Does it have water bowls, room to spread out, and places your pup can relax comfortably? Make sure that while you may be having a good time, your pup doesn’t become stressed or overstimulated. 

Pack The Right Gear

Taking your dog on outings requires more than a leash and collar. To keep you both safe and happy on the go, make sure you’re equipped with these necessities:

• Leash or stroller: Purchase a leash no longer than six feet to abide by leash laws. Elderly or disabled pets may prefer to get around via stroller.
• Collar or harness: While collars are popular, consider a harness for added comfort and security.
• Identification: Even the most obedient dogs could get loose if you get in to an unexpected scenario. Have your dog wear an ID tag with contact information and implant a microchip for added protection.
• Portable bowls: Carry collapsible bowls to keep your dog hydrated on the go. And of course, pack fresh water so you can refill as needed. If you’ll be away from home for long, bring food or treats too!
• Doggy bags: Everybody poops. Attach a roll to your dog’s leash so you never forget bags.
• Towel or Wipes: In Houston you never know what kind of weather you’ll run into. Unless you want dirty paw prints all over your car seats, have an extra towel or wipes to keep your car clean during those unexpected rain storms. 
• Car restraint: According to the Center for Pet Safety, the safest options for canine passengers are harness seat belts or crash-tested crates secured to the vehicle.

Brush Up On Training

A little training will go a long way. Basic commands such as sit, stay, and heel, as well as strong loose leash walking skills, will make for a more enjoyable outing for you and your pup. Teaching your pup to respond to your verbal commands with multiple distractions around will aid you in moving about busy areas with ease and comfort.
